New York Driving School License Suspended for Fraud

Published March 6, 2012 by Scott Gottlieb, Injury Law Attorney

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has once again shown he is serious after he vowed last year to keep New Yorkers safe from unsafe bus drivers and their companies. Last year the state ran a campaign to inspect all buses resulting in removing 621 buses and 644 drivers off the road pending the correction of license or equipment shortcomings. Yesterday, Cuomo announced the state has shut down a commercial driver’s license school for fraud.

Our Binghamton motor vehicle accident attorneys applaud the state’s efforts in ensuring the safety of the buses in our state. Residents in Binghamton, and throughout the state of New York, often rely on bus transportation, and it’s critical that they are protected when traveling the highways.

According to the press release, the state suspended the license of the N&Y Professional Service Line (N&Y) driving school after the owners were found to have helped unqualified drivers get commercial licenses through an “elaborate system using a hidden camera and pager.”

“We vowed last year that New York would not tolerate unsafe buses, dangerous or unqualified drivers, or fraud in obtaining licenses, and that’s why this action is being taken,” Governor Cuomo said.

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has identified 174 commercial drivers’ license holders who were customers of the N&Y driving school. Those customers have been notified that they must report to a DMV and retake the driving test by Friday or their commercial drivers’ license will be suspended.

Lawmakers commended Cuomo for his actions. Assemblywoman Grace Meng said, “I applaud Governor Cuomo’s priority in keeping New Yorkers safe on the roads. These types of irresponsible and dishonest acts hurt not only the drivers themselves but others on the road.”

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. applauded the closure of the school, and is calling for New York State to “take the next step and approve a law requiring criminal background checks for all bus drivers.”
