NY Texting-While-Driving Law
In a press release this week, New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced the New York anti-texting law, enacted in July 2011, is a huge success for letting New Yorkers know texting while driving will not be tolerated.
The state of New York made texting while driving a primary traffic offense in July, meaning police could stop drivers specifically for the act. Since then, according to Cuomo’s announcement, law enforcement officials have issued 118,757 tickets – 7,495 tickets were issued for texting-while-driving, and 111,262 were issued for using a handheld electronic device while driving.
“Texting while driving is illegal and endangers the lives of New Yorkers across the state,” Governor Cuomo said. “These tickets should send a resounding message to all drivers: keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel.”
Last year, Binghamton personal injury attorney Scott C. Gottlieb congratulated local police on their focused effort on issuing citations for texting-while-driving. He now encourages all New York drivers to follow the law and put down their cell phone when behind the wheel.
According to the National Safety Council (NSC), nearly one-fourth of all crashes, or approximately 1.3 million auto accidents each year, can be attributed to cell phone use while driving. The NSC also found that distractions now join alcohol and speeding as leading factors in all automobile accidents.
Anyone hurt in a motor vehicle crash caused by the recklessness or negligence of the other driver should seek legal help right away. An experienced Binghamton car accident attorney can help an injured party file a claim and, especially, to fight the insurance company.
