Two NY Drunk Drivers Ruin Holidays by Endangering Others

Published December 2, 2011 by Scott Gottlieb, Injury Law Attorney

Police report that a Rochester-area woman who was seriously injured in a collision with a drunk driver is still fighting for her life. The accident occurred when the intoxicated driver crossed over the center line and ran head-on into a 62-year-old woman’s vehicle

Our Binghamton car accident attorneys warn that the days leading up to the holidays are some of the most dangerous times to be on the road due to people driving after excessive partying. Drivers in Binghamton should be wary of the dangers on our highways.

The victim had been out doing charity work for her church by delivering food baskets when she was struck. Doctors report that she is clinging to life after suffering from severe liver damage, internal bleeding and a broken leg.

Her son told WHEC news that he had been looking forward to spending time with her over the long Thanksgiving holiday. He had just left his home in Cincinnati to drive to Rochester for the long weekend. Instead he and other family members spent Thanksgiving at her bedside in Strong Memorial Hospital.

WHEC reported a second, disturbing DWI incident where a 15-year-old child called police and reported that his mother had picked him and a friend up from school and that she was driving drunk. The woman abandoned her car halfway off the roadside. When police later found her and questioned her at her home, her BAC was .23.

A two-year-old law called Leandra’s Law allowed the police to charge the woman with two counts of felony DWI. The law makes driving under the influence a felony when passengers 15 years and under are in the car.

Our NY accident attorneys warn drivers that holidays and holiday parties cause more drinkers to take to the roads. Stay alert and drive defensively, and contact the police if you see a drunk driver on our NY roads.
