Thanksgiving Drivers Should Be Aware of ‘Operation Hang Up’ Targeting Handheld Device Users

Published November 22, 2011 by Scott Gottlieb, Injury Law Attorney

The American Automobile Association (AAA) estimates that 42.5 million Americans will travel this year to celebrate Thanksgiving with friends and family, during the holiday travel period from 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 23, to 5:59 a.m. Monday, November 28.

Our NY car accident attorneys encourage Binghamton drivers to stay safe over the holiday period. Making sure all passengers are properly restrained and taking rest breaks can help improve safety on our highways.

“This is the first significant increase in any holiday travel this year,” said Bill Sutherland, VP for AAA Travel Services. “Memorial Day travel was statistically flat while Independence Day and Labor Day travel experienced decreases of 2.5 percent and 2.4 percent, respectively.”

Doing their part to keep our highways safe, the NY State Police will be targeting drivers using cell phones and other electronic devices while behind the wheel. Governor Andrew Cuomo reported that the campaign “Operation Hang Up” was designed for Thanksgiving week.

In July of this year, Governor Cuomo signed into law the use of handheld electronic devices for texting or talking as a primary traffic offense. The penalty for using a handheld device while driving has increased from two to three points.

The campaign is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Besides distracted driving, low seatbelt use adds to the numbers of preventable serious injuries and traffic fatalities over the period.

The NHTSA’s fatality data showed that the 2009 Thanksgiving holiday period resulted in over 300 deaths from car crashes nationwide. Fifty-two percent of those killed were not properly restrained. Of the 187 nighttime fatalities, 54% were unrestrained where restraint use was known.

Our NY accident attorneys encourage drivers to be especially vigilant and safety conscious when driving this holiday week.
