“On the Road, Off the Phone” Part of June Safety Campaign
The National Safety Council (NSC) continues with their National Safety Month activities focusing this week on those who use cell phones while driving and encouraging drivers to put them down now and forever while driving. They estimate that 23 percent of all automobile accidents are caused by drivers who are either talking on the phone or texting.
It is important to note that anytime a driver uses a cell phone, whether it’s holding the phone or via a headset, the driver is still distracted and poses a danger to other drivers. Our Binghamton accident attorneys encourage New York drivers to put the phone down while driving to help reduce the dangers on our roadways.
The NSC chose the month of June to focus on preventing unintentional injury and death by drawing attention to the practice of adopting and maintaining safe and healthy practices every day. They point out that drivers who are on cell phones can see only 50 percent of the information needed while driving. Tunnel vision results when talking or texting on the phone, but putting down the phone is a simple practice drivers can adopt that could mean the difference between life and death.
They also suggest the following:
- Turn off or silence cell phones before driving.
- Inform callers via voice message that calls will be returned when it is safe to do so.
- Urgent calls requiring immediate attention should be made when a safe area appears for calling on the roadside or in a parking lot.
- On long trips, take breaks to check messages and return important calls.
- Spread the word to family and friends to stop using their cell phones while driving and change the recording on your voice mail greeting telling callers it is not safe to make or receive calls while driving.
