Pedestrian Fatalities Result in Law For Convex Truck Mirrors
The recent death of a toddler crossing a Brooklyn street on a tricycle prompted Governor Andrew Cuomo to sign a law this week requiring new mirrors on large trucks in NY City. The four-year-old boy was run over in May when he was in a crosswalk in the blind spot of a truck.
New York State registered trucks with a 26,000 pound maximum weight are now required to be equipped with convex mirrors on the front while driving in NY City. Our Binghamton accident attorneys recognize the limitations of this law, but support this measure as a first step in preventing accidental injuries or deaths in the state.
John Vlasto, a spokesman for Governor Cuomo, said, “Requiring trucks to be equipped with special convex mirrors is a necessary step that will hopefully reduce the number of injuries and deaths that have been the result of a drivers’ inability to see pedestrians that pass in front of their vehicle.”
The Cuomo administration cited federal statistics that show 71% of pedestrians killed by large trucks were hit by the front of the vehicle.
Some say the law is insufficient to save lives since the mirrors do not help visibility if a truck is moving. Instead they believe that large, convex mirrors should be placed on telephone poles around corners and at crosswalks to improve safety for all pedestrians.
The law excludes trucks that may be from New Jersey and other states that may be traveling through NY City.
Our NY injury attorneys support any safety measures, but warn that this law only provides only so much protection to small children and others who cross the street on their own.
The attorneys at Scott C. Gottlieb, Injury Law Attorney, encourage Binghamton pedestrians to be very careful of drivers who may not be paying attention at crosswalks or anywhere on the roads.
