NY Aggressive Driving Accident Reminds All Drivers to Stay Alert on Roadways

Published October 7, 2011 by Scott Gottlieb, Injury Law Attorney in Rochester reports that a woman was killed in a violent, single-car accident last week in NY. The police found that the driver, who was traveling nearly 100 mph when exiting 490 near Ames Street, lost control of her vehicle and hit a telephone pole, then slammed into a garage.

It is unknown whether other factors such as alcohol or drug use led to the fatal crash. It is also unclear what provoked this woman to steal the car and to drive aggressively and erratically on the roadways. No one else was injured in the accident, but no one is safe when drivers act recklessly on New York highways.

Our New York injury attorneys at Scott C. Gottlieb, Injury Law Attorney, encourage Binghamton drivers to report dangerous driving behaviors to the police by calling 911. If you witness someone driving erratically or dangerously we urge you to stay alert and pull over, if necessary, to avoid the driver.

According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), aggressive driving is a factor in 56% of fatal car crashes nationwide. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identifies aggressive driving behaviors as weaving, tailgating, distracted driving, unsafe lane changing and speeding. The NHTSA adds that aggressive drivers are more likely to drink and drive, contributing to further risks to other drivers.

Through the NHTSA’s aggressive-driving campaign, they have taken on raising the public’s awareness of the dangers of aggressive drivers saying, “We need to get to the point in society, where aggressive driving simply is not acceptable.”

Aggressive driving is extremely dangerous and can lead to serious injury and death. According to the NHTSA, to avoid becoming a victim of an aggressive driver “put your pride aside” and quickly move out of the way if a driver begins to tailgate you or wants to get around you. The group also suggests avoiding eye contact, which can sometimes be misinterpreted as a challenge. Specifically, they say, ignore the driver and do not make any gestures.

AAA says “it is clear that aggressive driving poses a serious traffic safety threat.” And our New York car accident attorneys agree wholeheartedly. We urge all drivers to focus on driving safely and to steer clear of other drivers driving in an aggressive or erratic manner.
