Gauze Left In Patient - Medical Malpractice Lawsuit Filed

Published December 21, 2009 by Scott Gottlieb, Injury Law Attorney

Staten Island University Hospital and two doctors have been named in a medical malpractice lawsuit filed by a woman who alleges a piece of gauze was left inside when she underwent liver surgery in 2000, reports Staten Island Real-Time News.

Two weeks after the original surgery, the now 59-year-old woman, was readmitted to the hospital for an intra-abdominal abscess. During this second surgical procedure, a piece of gauze was found under the connective tissue which runs throughout the body. The suit alleges this “gauze foreign body” caused the abscess which led to a second surgery.
