Fatal Truck Accident Closes New York Thruway for Hours

Published December 16, 2011 by Scott Gottlieb, Injury Law Attorney

Police investigating the cause of a fatal crash involving a tractor trailer closed part of the New York Thruway for six hours early this week. A 50-year-old Syracuse man was killed when the car he was driving was hit from behind by a tractor -trailer.

Sharing the road with truckers creates constant danger. Our New York truck accident attorneys report on truck safety crackdowns by NY law enforcement frequently. Drivers in Binghamton should be especially vigilant on major highways where large trucks are present.

Close to 5,000 people are killed in truck accidents on American highways every year. Hundreds of thousands more are seriously injured. Just 15% of the people killed in large truck wrecks are occupants of the truck. 85% of the people that are killed in an accident with a tractor-trailer are passengers in other vehicles, bicyclists or pedestrians.

According to officers at the scene of the fatal accident, the 34-year-old truck driver struck the car killing the driver, and then was unable to stop his own vehicle. The tractor-trailer driver ran his big rig off the Thruway striking another tractor trailer that had been parked at a truck stop parking lot for the night.

Reports from the scene indicated that a truck driver and his wife were sleeping in the truck at the time their truck was hit, but they suffered no injuries.

The extended shutdown of the right lane of the Thruway was the result of the extensive damage that the accident caused.

Our Binghamton truck accident attorneys recommend that drivers be wary of large trucks sharing our highways. Reflections and blinding lights can make driving in darkness especially difficult when driving on major highways. When traveling near big rigs on NY highways make sure to stay out of a truck driver’s blind spots, always keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the truck, and watch out for turning trucks. Also, don’t hesitate to contact the authorities if you see a truck being driven erratically.
