Eight Unsafe Tour Bus Companies Have Their Licenses Suspended
Governor Cuomo’s Administration announced last month that eight New York tour bus companies had their operating licenses suspended due to noncompliance with safety regulations. Two deadly bus crashes recently are indicative of the kinds of dangers that negligent drivers and disregard for safety regulations can cause.
According to the NY DOT, the following carriers are suspended from operating in the state: Best Trails and Travel Corp; Party Ride; A&W Tours Inc.; Touch of Class & Coach, Inc.; Silver Star Limo Company, LLC; Zoladz Limousine Service; Long Island Limousine Service Corp.; and Big Apple Bus Charter, Inc.
Binghamton residents should be aware of those companies on the list and also make sure that they report any potential safety issues of which they may be aware with any other tour bus or commercial carrier.
Before being allowed to operate again in NY, the companies will have to pay for a DOT review of their vehicle fleets, drivers’ records, and company finances. If they are found non-compliant, then the companies’ licenses will be permanently revoked.
A more aggressive inspection effort undertaken by NY DOT over the past four months has resulted in 3,000 roadside bus inspections with 542 drivers and/or vehicles being placed Out-of-Service. This is a significant increase over 2010, where 615 buses were inspected at roadside during the entire year.
DOT conducts more than 160,000 routine bus safety inspections annually, and in cooperation with the State Police, conducts more than 120,000 surprise roadside inspections of buses and trucks annually.
The stepped-up inspections and increased staff will help take the dangerous vehicles and drivers off the road. Governor Cuomo said, “The frequent, and at times flagrant, violations of state and federal safety regulations by charter bus companies has gone on for too long and put too many lives at risk.”
