Child Passenger Safety Week Offers New York Residents Opportunity for Child Car Seat Safety Checks

Published September 18, 2012 by Scott Gottlieb, Injury Law Attorney

This week, New York law enforcement agencies are partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in educating New Yorkers on the importance of properly fitted child safety seats. Installing a child’s safety seat correctly is difficult and is often done improperly. To educate adults on the proper use of child safety restraints, the NHTSA launched its Child Passenger Safety Week campaign. The campaign runs through September 22, ending with National Seat Check Saturday.

“Securing your child in a correctly installed child safety seat is one of the most important things you can do to protect your child’s life every day,” according to the NHTSA. In fact, the NHTSA reports that when properly restrained infants have a 71 percent greater chance of surviving a car crash and toddlers have a 54 percent decrease in the risk of death.

The campaign is geared to helping parents find the appropriate car seat for their child. According to the NHTSA:

“There are so many car seat types and models, how do you know which one is right for your child? The right car seat or booster fits your child and your car, and is one you will use correctly every time you travel. Not only will your child ride as safely as possible, you will be establishing the foundation for a lifelong habit of seat belt use every time your child travels.”

With three out of four child safety seats improperly installed, it is critical for parents and caregivers to take the time to ensure a proper fit for their child. New York residents can contact their local police for assistance in properly securing their child seats.

The New York car accident attorneys at Scott C. Gottlieb, Injury Law Attorney, encourage all New York drivers with young children to take the time to have a safety seat inspection.
