April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Published April 5, 2012 by Scott Gottlieb, Injury Law Attorney

Since July 2011 when New York enacted its anti-texting law, law enforcement has issued thousands of tickets to violators of the law. “Keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo when announcing the crackdown on texting-while-driving. Now, April has been designated as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and state safety advocates ask all drivers to put down their phones and stay focused when behind the wheel.

Our New York car accident attorneys ask the same of drivers in the Binghamton area. Drivers that are texting or talking on their phones cannot focus clearly on their surroundings. Keep yourself and others safe by following New York’s anti-texting law.

“The traffic safety community has a simple message for drivers: One Text or Call could Wreck it All,” said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood in his blog announcing National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Distracted drivers are responsible for thousands of fatal crashes each year. In fact, the National Safety Council (NSC) estimates almost 25 percent of car crashes involve cell phone use. In a press release, the NSC asks all drivers to pledge “I will not use my cell phone while driving in any way.”

“It’s time to start changing the social acceptance of cell phone use while driving,” said Janet Froetscher, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. “While many understand the dangers, they still use their cell phones when they drive. We hope people will take the pledge this April to help prevent needless tragedies and keep our roadways safer.”

National Distracted Driving Awareness Month was established by the U.S. House of Representatives in March 2010.The resolution was drafted in memory of Erica Forney, a young girl who was killed by a distracted driver.

Our New York auto accident attorneys urge all New York drivers to make April the month you put down your cellphone and stay focused while driving.
