Allstate Report Ranks New York Drivers According to Car Accident Frequency

Published September 6, 2012 by Scott Gottlieb, Injury Law Attorney

Allstate released its eighth annual “Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report.” In an effort to identify America’s safest drivers, Allstate ranked America’s 200 largest cities according to car collision frequency.

According to the report, on average, Americans are in an accident every 10 years. For the fifth year, Sioux Falls, South Dakota holds top honors as the city with the safest drivers. Sioux Falls drivers average an accident once every 13.8 years.

New York drivers fell in the middle to the bottom of the pack. Rochester was ranked 131st with an accident every 8.6 years. Syracuse drivers were 119th with an average 12.2% higher than the norm with 8.9 years between collisions. Buffalo came in at 145th with an accident frequency of 8.1 years. Yonkers drivers were apt to wreck every 7.3 years placing them in 172nd place on the list.

Among cities with a population of more than one million, New York ranks 7th out of 10. Overall, New York is ranked 176th on the list with an average of 7.1 years between collisions.

“Allstate’s Best Driver’s Report was created to boost the country’s discussion on safe driving. Each year we hope the report will increase awareness about the importance of being tolerant and attentive behind the wheel,” said Mike Roche, senior vice president of claims, Allstate.

Allstate offers the following tips for driving safely in smaller cities and suburban areas:

  • Watch the speed limit. Speed limits may be greater than in city traffic, which can lead some drivers to speed up and make roads dangerous.
  • Look out for pedestrians, especially children. While there are typically fewer pedestrians or obstacles than in large metropolitan areas, there are also typically fewer crosswalks, so pedestrians may be less aware of traffic rules such as where and when to cross the street.
  • Know the rules of the road. Suburban streets typically have fewer streetlights and signs, or greater distance between lights and signs. This means darker conditions when driving at night and less opportunity to be reminded of speed limits and other road rules throughout the day.
  • Keep a safe distance – especially around large vehicles. Large vehicles like semi-trucks are more likely found on suburban roads than in large metro areas. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and others, and know that truck drivers might have limited visibility. If you attempt to pass a truck, make sure you have plenty of time and space to maneuver safely.
