Owego, New York (population in 2000: 20,365) is the county seat of
Tioga
County. Located on the Susquehanna River, Owego's quaint, historic beauty is centrally located near several colleges (Cornell University, Ithaca College, and Binghamton University, among others). Wineries and golf courses dot the area, and visitors will find a variety of Bed and Breakfasts, such as
Angels in the
Attic, located in Owego's Historic District which overlooks the Susquehanna River.Owego is part of a region well known for its abundant natural beauty and outdoor recreation activities. The
Finger Lakes Trail runs through the county; and hikers travel through some of the most remote and awesome areas of the Southern Tier Region. The Susquehanna River is renowned for trout and muskellunge
fishing, as well as being a great river for canoeing and kayaking.
Owego (where the valley widens) is an Iroquoian name. The Iroquois, lived in the central and western parts of New York prior to the 16th century. The Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, and Seneca tribes were the
Iroquois
Confederacy. Their stamp is on this lovely land and their history is honored in Owego.
Owego is 26 miles west of
Binghamton, NY, which was originally also in Tioga County. In 1791, Tioga County included the present
Broome County as well as
Chemung Counties and parts of
Chenango and
Schuyler
Counties.
TIOGA MEDIA, INC provides one of Binghamton's strongest radio stations, WEBO (1330 AM) from Owego. W273AB (102.5 FM) is also a major station beaming from Owego.
Highway 96 provides excellent commuter access to the
Binghamton, New York metro area, but much family entertainment is available right here in this family oriented town. The Strawberry Festival is an annual draw for the entire area in June or July. The famed St. Patrick's School hosts a Fall Festival which includes games, auctions, and dinner. The Owego Farmers Market is an open-air community gathering from June to October. The
Tioga Scenic Railroad offers special Fall Foliage excursions as well as their regular runs and special charters.
Tioga
Gardens, and the Historic Owego Marketplace are must-sees, and
Tioga County Council on the Arts offers galleries, theater and concerts in the park as well.
