The
Chenango Canal connected to the Erie Canal in 1837,
and Greene became a thriving port town, carrying
local farmer’s produce and dairy products to
market. By 1878, the railroads had supplanted the
river’s importance, but Greene retains memories of
those prosperous times in its well-preserved historic
district. Over one hundred different properties,
both commercial and residential, can be toured here.
The Greene Museum is a mecca for residents and
visiting historians alike. The Bates Round Barn
still stands, a unique four-floor construction from
1914.

over 72 miles. For those less ambitious, the town of
Greene offers several lovely bed
