Greene, New York is a charming little town found in rural Chenango County in the state’s Southern Tier Region. This lovely county covers almost 900 square miles of beautiful rolling hills, fertile river valleys and lush green forests.

Greene has the second largest population in the county, with a Census 2000 count of almost 6,000. The county seat of Norwich numbered more than 7,00 and the Village of Greene came in at 1,701.

Greene, settled in 1792, nestling on the banks of the beautiful Chenango River, is visited today by sportsmen for its fantastic fly fishing opportunities.

The Chenango Canal connected to the Erie Canal in 1837, and Greene became a thriving port town, carrying local farmer’s produce and dairy products to market. By 1878, the railroads had supplanted the river’s importance, but Greene retains memories of those prosperous times in its well-preserved historic district. Over one hundred different properties, both commercial and residential, can be toured here. The Greene Museum is a mecca for residents and visiting historians alike. The Bates Round Barn still stands, a unique four-floor construction from 1914.

Chenango County draws visitors from all over who want to escape the frantic pace of city living and explore the quaint villages and towns surrounded by nature’s glory. A paradise for both outdoorsmen and wildlife, 80 thousand acres of state land offer hunting and hiking, camping and horseback riding. Winter months find cross-country skiers and snowmobilers using the miles of trails. Four rivers wind through the County, perfect for canoeing and kayaking, as well as premier fishing. Those wanting to commune with nature will discover the lovely Finger Lakes Trail, which runs 562 miles, connecting the Catskills and the Allegheny Mountains. It wanders through the County for over 72 miles. For those less ambitious, the town of Greene offers several lovely bed & breakfasts, found in gracious historic homes.

Game hunters and antique hunters enjoy the area equally. Greene’s downtown district satisfies antique buffs, while the surrounding wilderness keeps hunters happy. A side trip to Smada Farms, where maple sugar is still tapped from the trees each spring, can be a tasteful experience for all, including maple ice cream and candy, a tour of the working farm and a hay ride to top it off.

Greene, New York is a breath of fresh air for city dwellers from all over. They find a place to return to year after year to relax and rejuvenate, as well as a place to consider for relocation to a different way of life.
