Rav4 SUV and Certain Lexus Models Recalled by Toyota
Toyota Motor Sales announced yesterday that it has issued a voluntary safety recall involving 2006 to early 2011 model year RAV4 and 2010 model year Lexus HS 250h vehicles sold in the U.S. Toyota estimates that 760,000 Toyota RAV4 and 18,000 Lexus vehicles are affected.
Our Binghamton accident attorneys encourage owners of the Toyota Rav4 and Lexus to heed the recall notice they will receive shortly and to have their vehicle inspected immediately.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) announcement of the recall, if the nuts for adjusting the rear wheel alignment are improperly tightened during service, the rear suspension arm (rear tire rod) may develop unwanted movement and rust leading to thread damage and eventual failure. Failure of the rear tire rod will cause an abrupt change in the vehicle’s alignment.
Toyota noted in its press release that it is currently developing a remedy. Once the remedy is identified the company will send a notification letter by first class mail advising owners to make an appointment with an authorized Toyota or Lexus dealer to have the fix performed at no charge.
It is important for owners to take this recall seriously. Failure of the rear tire rod, according to the NHTSA, could cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
