The (NC) Burlington Times News reports a 71-year-old woman will receive $1,975,000 from FedEx and the driver of the FedEx truck for injuries she suffered in a 2008 car accident.

On May 21, 2008, a FedEx truck collided head-on into her Chrysler minivan as she was turning left at an intersection. Her 88-year-old mother-in-law died of the injuries she suffered in the accident. The wrongful death lawsuit on her behalf has been settled through mediation.

It took the jury only 1½ hours to reach their verdict - one of the largest in the history of Alamance County.

ABC News reports a woman has been awarded $23.4 million by a California jury against Ford Motor Company following a 2007 accident which left her a quadriplegic.

The woman lost control of her Ford Explorer when the tread separated from her rear tire causing her car to roll three times down an embankment. She was left with both of her legs and most of her body paralyzed.

The lawsuit alleged flaws in the 1997 Explorer's design caused it to lose control when the tire treads separated. Ford argued the accident was caused by worn-out tires.

The jury returned a unanimous verdict for the plaintiff.

The parents of a teenage boy have filed suit against Autumn Transportation following a crash that injured their son and caused emotional turmoil when his friend was killed in the crash, reports the Connecticut News. The parents are suing on behalf of their son according to Connecticut law since the boy is a minor.

The bus went off the highway after it collided with a Volvo station wagon. The suit alleges the bus company allowed a driver who did not have proper training and licensing to drive the school bus, and further claims the company does not adequately supervise or train its drivers. The bus driver's license has since been suspended by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Also named in the suit are the bus driver and the teen driver of the Volvo for failing to take necessary precautions to avoid an accident.

The Palo Alto Daily News reports the city of Palo Alto will pay $1.5 million to a man injured in a vehicle crash in 2006. The victim alleged a city worker failed to stop for a red light because he was reaching for his cell phone, resulting in a rear-end collision which left the plaintiff with debilitating spinal injuries. The victim had asked for more than $5 million from Palo Alto.

The Seattle Times reports King County has agreed to pay what is believed to be the largest amount the county has ever paid a single plaintiff - $7 million to a woman hit by Metro van.

In November 2007, the woman was riding her Vespa scooter to work as an operating room nurse when she was struck by the Metro van. The driver failed to yield the right of way at a stop sign.

The impact with the van caused the woman to be thrown 40 feet, suffer severe internal injuries and compound leg fractures. She was in a coma for several days following the accident and has not been able to return to work.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports a jury has awarded $89 million to the family of a 28 year-old man killed in 2008 as a result of a drunk driver.

Dennis Riegel Jr. was killed and his pregnant fiancee was seriously injured as they returned from a shopping trip. She was 13 weeks pregnant at the time of the accident and has since given birth to a daughter.

The 20-year-old driver who hit Riegel's car had a blood alcohol level more than two times the legal limit and was driving on a hardship license after an earlier DWI.

Riegel's fiancee and daughter will probably not be able to recover the award.

A 14-year-old boy who was left paralyzed below the waist from a 2002 automobile wreck has been awarded $6.5 million by a Memphis jury, reports The Commercial Appeal.

The boy, who was 6 years old at the time of the accident, was in the back seat of his grandfather's 1995 Mercury restrained by an adult seatbelt. The shoulder strap was behind the boy because it did not fit, when his car was struck head-on by the second car. The boy’s father, grandfather and the driver of the other car were all killed in the accident.

Ford Motor Company was found to be 15% liable for the total $43.8 million judgment for an adult seatbelt that was defective and not suitable for a child.

Georgia Gainesvilletimes.com reports a Hall County jury has awarded $166,000 to a 57-year-old woman who suffered serious injuries in a car crash caused by a drunk driver in 2007.

The drunk driver's Tahoe struck a Honda Civic with such force it was knocked into the woman's PT Cruiser, causing an open compound fracture to her ankle. She continues to have pain and loss of motion in that ankle. The passengers in the Honda were also injured -- one had to be airlifted to a hospital.

The drunk driver had only minimum insurance which went to the family in the Honda. The injured woman had underinsured motorist coverage but chose to let the jury decide the amount she should receive for her injuries.

One of the country's largest personal injury verdicts was awarded to a former college student who is permanently brain damaged after a 2007 automobile accident, reports the Mercury News. The Santa Clara jury found two truckers and state transportation officials at fault in the accident.

On May 3, 2007, the victim was in the back seat of a car heading for a camping trip with three other men when two trucks collided, sending one into the rear of the men's car. The accident left the 23-year-old college student with permanent brain damage requiring full-time care at a neurological treatment center.

Out of court settlements will bring the total damages to more than $60 million, which will be used for the man's care and rehabilitation.

The Oregonian reports the most expensive verdict in the history of the city of Beaverton has been awarded to a 27 year-old pedestrian hit by a police car in February, 2007. The town will pay $507,500.

The accident happened when the woman and her brother were trying to cross a highway at an unmarked crossing used by transit riders. The pair saw headlights in the distance but thought they had enough time to safely cross. The police officer told investigators all he saw was a pair of white shoes, tried to slow down then hit something.

The woman suffered injuries to her left leg, collar bone, back, hip, and ribs. She still walks with a cane and has not been able to return to work.

The sole survivor of an SUV struck by an 18-wheeler in a construction area of Texas I-35 has filed a wrongful death lawsuit. Named in the suit are her 13-year-old son and her 63-year-old father who both died in the accident which occurred over the 4th of July weekend.

The woman's lawsuit was filed against the truck driver, the driver's company, the construction company, and the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT.) Her SUV had slowed down for traffic in a construction zone where the highway narrowed to one lane when they were hit by the tractor trailer.

The lawsuit claims TXDOT did not have adequate safety controls in place which made the accident possible. After spending five days in ICU, the survivor is still recovering from her injuries.

Since the July 4th accident, three more people have been killed by another 18-wheeler in the same construction area.

The family of a 39-year-old scientist at the University of Washington has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver of the vehicle that struck and killed him on February 4, 2009, reports the Ballard News-Tribune.

Kevin Black was struck by a Ford E250 van as he was bicycling to work. The driver attempted a U-turn on a street unable to accommodate it and drove into the bike lane, hitting Black. Black was taken to Harborview Medical Center where he later died.

A Hinds County Circuit Court Judge has ruled in favor of a Mississippi meteorologist and his wife in their lawsuit against the city of Jackson for injuries suffered in a 2006 accident, reports WLBT in Jackson. The total award was close to $2 million.

The couple suffered multiple broken bones and internal injuries when their car was hit by a car being chased by police. Judge Swan Yerger ruled the police officer acted with reckless disregard during the chase and found the City of Jackson was 40 percent responsible for the accident. A Utah 4th District Court jury has awarded the family of a man killed in a traffic accident in 2006 almost $4.4 million, reports The Salt Lake Tribune.

Due to state law caps on damages against the state and the victim's share of the responsibility, the award will be reduced by almost $2 million.

The family of the Payson man sued the state Department of Transportation and a subcontractor for failing to post appropriate signs warning of traffic delays as they were working on the reconstruction of a bridge. The man was killed as he came over the crest of a hill and tried to swerve to miss the driver ahead of him who slammed on his brakes to avoid hitting cars stopped because of the bridge project. He crashed his vehicle and died 13 days later.

The jurors awarded almost $3 million for economic damages and $375,000 each for the man's wife and three children.

$1.5M Awarded In Auto Accident Case

A Chilton County, Alabama jury has awarded $3.5 million to the family of a man killed when the van he was driving was crushed between two logging trucks, reports the Montgomery Advertiser.

Ken Gorum Trucking and Gary Fruge, the driver of the logging truck, were held responsible for the accident and have been ordered to pay the award. The jury found Fruge was speeding, and the truck had defective brakes, when it crashed into the victim's van.

The victim's car was pushed into the logs on the truck in front of him, causing the logs to come through his windshield - one went through his head and killed him. Although the driver claims he was going only 45 miles per hour, evidence suggests he was traveling between 65 and 75 mph.

The San Mateo Daily Journal reports a woman who had her let amputated after being pinned against a wall by a car has sued the driver.

The woman was with her daughter and other Girl Scouts on March 8 selling cookies when the driver plowed into them, leaving both mother and daughter seriously injured.

The lawsuit alleges the driver pulled into a disabled parking spot and began to get out of the car without putting it into park while the car was still rolling. The driver quickly slammed the door and instead of hitting the brakes, he hit the gas, causing the car to launch forward.

The complaint contends the woman and her daughter suffer permanent injuries that will continue to incur medical expenses.
