Booster Seat Reviews Identify 31 High Ratings for Safety and Fit

Published October 14, 2011 by Scott Gottlieb, Injury Law Attorney

A booster seat review by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has identified 31 seats this year that provide a high degree of safety for children riding in vehicles – the highest number since the reviews started in 2008.

Manufacturers are designing their seats more carefully to make sure that lap belts and shoulder harnesses provide protection as designed. Our NY attorneys applaud the companies for doing their part in helping keep our littlest passengers in Binghamton safe.

The IIHS based the reviews strictly on the degree to which lap belts and shoulder harnesses properly fit across the thigh area and shoulder so the children may be properly restrained. The highest safety ratings were given to those models that fit different sizes of children in the 4 to 8-year-old age groups and in different model cars, minivans, and SUVs.

Parents should review the IIHS website which has descriptions and photos of the proper placement for the belts and harnesses to provide the maximum restraint for children in the car seats. With the large number of models that are safe, parents can select the model that fits in their price range and meets their needs.

Also, on the website, parents can see the list of all brands and models that the engineers reviewed, and their ranking.

Six of the models were listed as not recommended since they did not meet the criteria for lap belt and harness fit. Four of the six were Evenflo Highback models, and two were Safety1st models. Note that both of these manufacturers had several models that were in the highest safety ranking, “Best Bets.”

When selecting the booster seat based upon the rankings, make sure that the selection is the right model for you and your child.

Our New York injury attorneys at Scott C. Gottlieb, Injury Law Attorney, encourage Binghamton parents to go the extra step and carefully select a car seat to protect their child.
