Accident Serves as a Reminder for NY Drivers to Stay Alert for Pedestrians
A grandmother sacrificed her own life for that of her grandson in a tragic hit-and-run accident last week. The woman was walking home from a church service on Staten Island with her grandson and daughter, when an SUV headed directly towards them. In an heroic act, the grandmother pushed her grandson out of the path of the vehicle. The woman was struck by the large vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The 8-year-old boy suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the SUV fled the scene and apparently returned to his home. However, the 40-year-old male driver turned himself in hours later. He was charged with fleeing the scene of an accident. Police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the accident.
Our New York car accident attorneys warn drivers to stay alert to pedestrians crossing the streets when driving through crowded towns and cities. Drivers and pedestrians in the Binghamton area should be aware of the fact that they are sharing the roads, and they should stay especially vigilant at intersections.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that nationwide in 2009, 4,092 pedestrians died in traffic crashes. In addition, an estimated 59,000 pedestrians were injured after being struck by a vehicle. Pedestrian deaths accounted for 12 percent of all traffic fatalities in motor vehicle traffic crashes that year.
SafeNY reports 311 New York pedestrians lost their lives after being struck by a vehicle in 2010. There were 16,357 accidents involving pedestrians during the same year, resulting in 16,090 pedestrian injuries. 79 of the pedestrian deaths were from an alcohol-related crash.
As the weather gets warmer, more and more people will be enjoying the sights and will be out walking throughout the state. Our NY personal injury attorneys ask that all drivers take extra care when driving around town and to slow down when approaching intersections.
