Apalachin, New York
is a lovely little hamlet tucked away in the southern portion of the state's pristine
Finger Lakes
Region. Named for the creek running through it, Apalachin means 'From where the messenger returned' in the Native American tongue.Located in the southeast corner of the town of
Owego, Apalachin's population is just over a thousand, according to the 2000 Census report. The community lies adjacent to the
Southern Tier Expressway and just south of the beautiful
Susquehanna
River.
Apalachin is home to the
Waterman Conservation Education
Center, funded and operated by donations and volunteers. Nature trails and an interpretive center help to educate residents about the lush beauty surrounding them. The Lolita Waterman Wildlife Gardens, which surround the center, teach homeowners how to incorporate native plants into their gardens that help attract and feed the wildlife.
The Apalachin Marsh lies just across the road from the center. Designated as a protected wetland by New York's Department of Environmental Conservation, the marsh attracts countless species of ducks, herons, hawks and other wildlife species.
Like the rest of the surrounding Tioga County, Apalachin enjoys a low crime rate as well as affordable housing, while the quality of education available is high. Tioga County attracts numerous high-tech corporations such as
