New York Parents Encouraged to Drive Safely – Your Teens Are Watching

Our Binghamton car accident attorneys have written numerous articles on the importance of parents encouraging their children and other young drivers to drive safely. However, according to a new study, parents should look at their own driving behaviors if they want their children to be safe drivers.

In the survey conducted by Liberty Mutual and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), researchers found that an overwhelming number of the young drivers reported they get their poor driving habits from their parents.  In fact, nearly 90 percent of teens report their parents talk on the cell while driving, 88 percent of their parents speed, and 59 percent reported their parents have sent a text while driving.

Unfortunately, teens are mirroring their parents’ poor driving habits.  According to the 1,700 teens interviewed for the survey:

  • 90 percent of the teens reported talking on a cell phone while driving;
  • 94 percent reported they occasionally speed;
  • Nearly 80 percent of the teens reported sending text messages when behind-the-wheel; and
  • 33 percent reported driving without a seatbelt.

“The best teacher for a teen driver is a good parental role model,” said Stephen Wallace, senior advisor for policy, research and education at SADD. “But parents have to demonstrate good driving behavior from the onset so new drivers understand that safe driving rules apply to everyone equally.”

Our Binghamton personal injury attorneys encourage parents to drive safely.  A parent’s influence on a teen driver is critical for ensuring that our New York highways are safer for all drivers.
