New Yorkers Encouraged to Observe National Cell Phone Courtesy Month

It seems that every where we turn someone is talking on a cellphone.  Unfortunately, still far too many Americans talk on their phones when driving our New York highways.  July has been dubbed “National Cell Phone Courtesy Month,” and it offers New Yorkers yet another opportunity to put their phones down while driving.

The courtesy month was founded in 2002 by Jacqueline Moore, an international etiquette expert, with the intent to encourage others to be more respectful of their surroundings while using their cell phone. The campaign takes on more importance this year as distracted driving becomes more widespread.  According to government statistics, over 3,000 Americans lose their lives every year on U.S. highways from distracted drivers.

Just last week our Binghamton car accident lawyers reported on the Blueprint for Ending Distracted Driving announced by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).  Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has focused on eliminating distracted driving, and cellphone use is one of the primary distractions among U.S. drivers.

Consumer Cellular, the exclusive cellphone service provider for AARP members, encourages all cellphone users to be mindful of others when talking on the phone.

“Cellphones have been a prominent part of our lifestyle for more than 15 years, yet people still find themselves wondering when – and how – it is most appropriate to make calls and respond to messages,” said John Marick, Consumer Cellular CEO in a press release.

July is the perfect opportunity to take the Oprah Winfrey “No Phone Zone Pledge” and make your car a no phone zone.  And keep it a no phone zone even after the campaign ends.

If you have been injured in a motor vehicle crash caused by a distracted driver you should seek legal help right away.  An experienced Binghamton car accident attorney can explain your legal rights.
