New York Tickets Over 20,000 Texting-While-Driving Violators in Year Since Tougher Texting Law Took Effect

The New York State Police has spent the last year enforcing the state’s anti-texting law that went into effect July 12, 2011.  According to an announcement by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, the effort has been successful: more than 20,000 tickets have been issued since the tougher law took effect.

Our Binghamton car accident attorneys once again applaud the efforts of our law enforcement for keeping NY drivers safe on our highways.  We also urge drivers to follow the law, and to not text and drive when on New York highways, or anytime when behind the wheel.

The state of New York made texting-while-driving a primary traffic offense last year, meaning police could stop drivers specifically for the act. The penalty for using a handheld device while driving was raised to three points against the person’s driver’s license.

“Using a handheld device while driving puts other motorists in danger and can lead to tragic consequences. These tickets should send a resounding message to all drivers: keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel,” said Governor Cuomo.

The announcement cited the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s data that attributed more than 3,000 deaths last year to distracted driving.  Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has called distracted driving “a dangerous epidemic” on America’s roadways.

20,958 texting-while-driving violations were issued across New York from July 2011 through July 2012.  Broome County drivers received 103 of those tickets.  Over the same time period from 2010 to 2011 just 4,569 tickets were issued statewide, with just 22 Broome County violations.

Anyone hurt in a motor vehicle crash caused by the recklessness or negligence of the other driver should seek legal help right away.  An experienced Binghamton car accident attorney can help an injured party file a claim and, especially, to fight the insurance company.
