NY Governor Cuomo Announces “Operation Hang Up”
We have reported numerous times on the call to drivers to put down their cell phones and to focus on the task at hand. New York safety advocates have conducted numerous campaigns and ticketed thousands of drivers, and still some drivers refuse to put down their phones.
New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced this week yet another campaign targeting distracted drivers – ‘Operation Hang Up.’ Last conducted over the long Thanksgiving Day holiday, the initiative is once again being used to target motorists that use their cell phone and other electronic devices while driving.
Our Binghamton personal injury attorneys cannot say it enough times – please do not text while driving. In just the few seconds it takes to look down at your phone, an accident can occur. We urge our Binghamton drivers to put their phone down and drive.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) calls distracted driving “a dangerous epidemic on America’s roadways.” It reports that in 2010, 3,000 Americans lost their lives in distracted driving related crashes. Further, the NHTSA reports that text messaging creates a crash risk 23 times worse than driving while not distracted.
“If you use a hand-held cell phone or are texting while driving, you should expect to receive a ticket from a New York State Trooper,” said Superintendent of the New York State Police Joseph A. D’Amico in the announcement of the campaign. “Electronic devices have become commonplace in our lives, but they have no place in the hands of a driver.”
The campaign runs from April 23 – April 29. Look for stepped up law enforcement throughout the state during the week.
