Winter is Not Over Yet; New Yorkers Urged to Stay Alert for Dangerous Driving Conditions

New York, and the entire east coast, has had one of the mildest winters on record, but the recent snowfall serves as a reminder that dangerous driving conditions may still be an issue.  Earlier this year we offered tips for driving in bad weather, however, with the potential for more snow this season, here is another article asking motorists to stay focused when driving in snow and ice.

A three-car accident near Rochester this weekend took the life of a 60-year-old man.  Another driver lost control of her vehicle in icy conditions and struck the man’s car head-on.  Our New York personal injury attorneys urge all drivers in Binghamton, and the surrounding areas, to slow down and stay alert if you must be out in poor weather.

In January, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) issued a press release urging drivers to be extra cautious during the winter.  “By slowing down, giving snow plows room to work and allowing extra time to get to your destination, we can save lives on New York’s highways this winter,” said NYSDOT Commissioner Joan McDonald.

New York is participating in the “Ice and Snow – Take it Slow” publicity campaign to enhance public awareness about the benefits of cautious driving during winter storms. Stay alert for these messages and heed the advice.

The department asks residents to avoid unnecessary travel and check 511 or 511ny.org for the latest road condition reports.

If you must be on the roadway, NYSDOT encourages you to be prepared for poor weather conditions. Keep your vehicle supplied with emergency equipment such as sand, a shovel, flares, booster cables, blankets and a portable radio. Ensure your cell phone is fully charged before heading out and keep it handy.  Do not call or text while driving, but in the case of an emergency contact the appropriate officials.

NYSDOT also recommends you let someone know your planned destination and route, and estimated time of arrival.  Should any issues arise, make sure to keep them apprised of your situation.

Our Binghamton car accident attorneys urge all drivers to stay off the roadways when bad weather strikes. Take the time to enjoy the beauty the snow can offer, but please drive safely if you must be out in the inclement weather.
