Hybrids Offer Safer Alternative to Conventional Smaller Cars, the IIHS reports
New research results reported by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reveals that occupants in hybrid cars involved in accidents suffer 25-27% fewer injuries than occupants of comparably sized conventional cars.
Our NY car accident attorneys recommend that NY residents looking to purchase a smaller car in the next year review the data on the hybrid safety, fuel efficiency, and price before making a decision on a conventional vehicle.
Science demonstrates that accidents involving smaller vehicles typically result in greater injuries to occupants, particularly when a larger vehicle is also involved. This is due to the fact that the lighter weight of the small car cannot withstand the force of the larger vehicle.
But for car owners drawn to the fuel efficiency and ease of handling of smaller cars, the hybrid offers a safer alternative.
Reviewing the insurance data for collision claims, the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) found that injury odds for a hybrid claim were 27% lower than the conventional vehicles. The HLDI concluded that the heavier weight of the hybrid largely explained the greater safety.
A spokesperson for the HLDI said, “Hybrids on average are 10 percent heavier than their standard counterparts. This extra mass gives them an advantage in crashes that their conventional twins don’t have.”
The analysis attempted to minimize findings in the data that could skew the results such as who drives the vehicles, their driving behaviors, and when they may have been driven.
Our NY injury attorneys continue to follow safety improvements and research that impact the safety of our highways. Binghamton drivers should look at hybrids as more than a fuel-efficient “green” alternative to smaller cars.
