Drunk Driver Also Under Influence of Drugs When Fatally Injured Farmers in Tragic July Auto Accident
Our accident attorneys reported the tragic deaths of five Amish farmers in Benton, NY after a drunk driver struck their van carrying 13 people. This week, police have reported that the driver in the July accident also had a “buffet” of drugs in his system.
Since the initial reports, the number of fatalities has risen to six. Our Binghamton accident attorneys urge drivers to be aware of erratic drivers and the possibility of drunk drivers who may be sharing the road.
Sheriff Ron Pike reported that besides being under the influence of alcohol, there was a “buffet of drugs involved that would require prescription and possibly other illegal substances” in the driver’s system.
In 2009, nearly 11,000 people died in crashes in the US where at least one driver had a blood alcohol concentration of greater than zero. In New York during the same period, 28 percent of the nearly 330 car accident fatalities involved an impaired driver.
These statistics do not reflect those under the influence of prescription or illegal drugs which only add to the dangers on our highways.
Our New York injury attorneys at Scott C. Gottlieb, Injury Law encourage Binghamton drivers to report dangerous driving behaviors to the police, or call 911 if you witness someone driving erratically or dangerously.
