Observe Basic Traffic Laws Over Labor Day Holiday
Hurricane Irene’s pass through New York may slightly decrease the amount of traffic on the roadways during the Labor Day weekend, but still large numbers of vacationers and residents looking for long-weekend getaways will take to the highways.
Besides the high volume of traffic, new roadway dangers associated with flooding, fallen trees, potholes from standing water, and rubbernecking by drivers looking at hurricane damage will require all drivers to be alert. Our New York accident attorneys caution that drivers should stay alert and focused on driving at all times, particularly in Binghamton.
According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), nearly 31.5 million people will drive at least 50 miles from home during the holiday weekend. Also, our NY attorneys have previously reported that law enforcement efforts to stop drunk driving will be stepped up during the long weekend.
Expect to see increased numbers of checkpoints and more presence by state troopers from 6:00 p.m., Friday, September 2, to midnight, Monday, September 5, the official Labor Day weekend hours.
The National Safety Council (NSC) each year estimates holiday traffic accidents and fatalities. This year they estimate that nationwide over the Labor Day weekend there will be 400 traffic fatalities and nearly 40,000 accident-related injuries. In 2008, there were 473 fatal accidents over the same holiday weekend, with 351 fatalities during the 2009 Labor Day period.
To improve your chances of avoiding an accident or serious injury, the NSC recommends that drivers observe these basic safe-driving tips:
- Make sure the driver and all passengers wear their safety belts,
- Have a designated driver for those drinking,
- Do not drive while using the cell phone or texting,
- Be a defensive driver.
As always, observe and drive according to the posted speed limits, take breaks before fatigue sets in and always keep a safe distance from other vehicles. Have a thorough maintenance check before all trips, including having all fluid levels checked, tire pressures adjusted and all lights checked.
Our NY accident attorneys ask that drivers practice good, safe driving behaviors throughout the Labor Day holiday weekend. Also, during this campaign period of zero tolerance for drunk drivers, know that troopers will be out in full force and will arrest those who are driving while impaired.
