National Campaign Against Drunk Driving in Progress
As with other holiday periods, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is sponsoring a campaign against drunk driving with the slogan “Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.” New York officers will participate with all states across the country by stepping up enforcement from August 19 through September 5.
Our accident attorneys in Binghamton, NY, continue to warn against drunk driving. NY schools do not begin until after Labor Day, and heavy travel is expected as vacationers head home. Troopers will be out in full force to stop and arrest anyone caught driving while impaired.
Campaign headquarters’ representatives at www.stopimpaireddriving.org emphasize that “even if you beat the odds and walk away from an impaired-driving crash alive, the trauma and financial costs for a crash or an arrest for driving while impaired can ruin your life. “
In NY State and across the country it is illegal to drink and drive with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or greater. During this crackdown, law enforcement personnel will have zero tolerance for drinking and driving.
According to the NHTSA, nearly one third of vehicle crashes involved a driver or motorcyclist with a BAC over the legal limit – nearly one fatality every 48 minutes nationwide. In New York during 2009, 1,156 people died in car crashes with 28 percent, or 321 of those deaths involving impaired drivers
Scott C. Gottlieb, Injury Law attorneys in Binghamton encourage drivers to practice safe driving at all times, but be especially careful during this busy, end-of-summer period. Be aware to drunk drivers on the highways and report anyone driving in an unsafe manner.
