High Pedestrian Death Rates Preventable Through Better Roadway Access

The Transportation for America organization has started a “Dangerous by Design 2011” campaign to reduce preventable traffic deaths involving pedestrians.  This campaign coincides with the release of a report that found nearly 48,000 pedestrians were killed in the United States between the years 2000 and 2009.

New York ranked 39th of the 50 states in the number of pedestrians killed on roadways with 3,222 pedestrians killed during the same period.    Drivers in Binghamton should constantly be aware of pedestrian traffic.  Pedestrians, too, should be alert to dangers they face especially in areas where no sidewalks or crosswalks exist.

Binghamton, NY had 34 pedestrian deaths during the 2000-2009 period.  This equates to 15.2% or 3% higher than the national average.

The Transportation for America organization blames the numbers of pedestrian deaths on neglect of pedestrian access in the design, build-out, and maintenance of our American roadways.  The funding crisis has left gaps in improvements and pedestrian access areas as states continue to trim budgets in attempts to provide for other critical programs.

In addition, with greater emphasis nationwide on fitness, more and more pedestrians are on the roadways walking and running.  The warm temperatures and longer daylight hours this time of year bring more people out, increasing the foot traffic.  Badly marked crosswalks, poorly visible stop signs, and malfunctioning traffic lights also increase the dangers.

Our injury attorneys at the law offices of Scott C. Gottlieb, Injury Law recognize that until improvements to our NY and federal roadways are made, drivers and pedestrians should look out for each other.
