Firepot Fuel Gels Recalled Due to Serious Injuries
Napa Home and Garden, Inc. has voluntarily recalled nearly a half-million jugs and bottles of fuel gel used to create a flame in patio firepots, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The gel has caused serious injuries to people in several states, including two New York injuries caused when the gel was poured into the firepots.
The New York Times reported last week that one of the injured was a teen who remains hospitalized in a coma as a result of burns sustained when the fuel gel exploded. The Times reported that injuries from Birdbrain, Inc. fuel gels have also occurred but no recall has been issued for that brand.
Witnesses and victims say the fuel gel explodes in a flash. The burning gel then sticks to the person’s clothes where the flame cannot be doused even when the victim rolls on the ground or is covered by a blanket. Our attorneys applaud Napa for pulling this dangerous product from the market, and we urge consumers in Binghamton to stop using any fuel gels in their firepots, and to return the gel to the retailer where they were purchased for a refund. NAPAfire and FIREGEL are the names of the recalled fuel gels.
CPSC reports that the “pourable gel fuel can ignite unexpectedly and splatter onto people and objects nearby when it is poured into a firepot that is still burning. This hazard can occur if the consumer does not see the flame or is not aware that the firepot is still ignited. Fuel gel that splatters and ignites can pose fire and burn risks to consumers.”
The CPSC had previously issued a warning emphasizing the dangers from the firepots and fuel gel after receiving eight reports of explosions or burns involving firepots with fuel gels since April 2010. The commission also reported that Napa has received notice of more than 37 reports with the gel and 23 with injuries.
Our New York personal injury attorneys recommend consumers immediately stop using firepots with any fuel gel. The Napa brand gels may have been purchased from any number of retailers, catalogs or landscape architects and should be returned for a full refund.
