Woman Run Over By Mentally Ill Patient, Sues Psychiatrist

In June 2008, a Tacoma woman who suffered brain damage after being run over by a 31-year-old mentally ill felon has filed a personal injury lawsuit against the psychiatrist who treated her, reports the News Tribune.

The lawsuit alleges the doctor did not do enough to treat the woman and did not notify the state corrections officials when her mental health deteriorated.  She was being treated as an outpatient as part of her release agreement when released from prison after serving time for assault.  She stole a car and ran down the victim in a random attack.

The lawsuit alleges the doctor “utterly failed” to ensure the woman was not dangerous to be on the streets and that the drugs prescribed by the doctor to stabilize the patient were not being taken.

A lawsuit against the state Department of Corrections for negligently supervising the woman was settled out of court in August for $4.5 million.
