$1.3 Million Paid In Mental Hospital Injury
Pierce County, Washington has agreed to pay $1.3 million in a settlement over injuries incurred when a mentally disturbed patient tried to escape, reports The Seattle Times.
In 2004, a 27 year-old male patient attempted to escape through a window of a county-owned mental hospital. He suffered multiple fractures when he climbed out of a fifth floor window and tried to jump about 20 feet to a fire escape landing.
The lawsuit brought against the Puget Sound Hospital by the patient and his family alleged he was not properly monitored by the staff. The hospital is now closed.
