$3 Million Awarded in Radiology Medical Malpractice Lawsuit

A Shiawassee County, Michigan jury has awarded a 65-year-old Michigan woman $2.9 million in a lawsuit she filed against Owasso Memorial Hospital and Shiawassee Radiology Consultants, reports the Flint News. However, under Michigan’s cap on damages, the amount will be reduced.

The woman claims a bowel leak she suffered in 2000 while having an ovarian cyst removed went undetected for 10 days. For x-rays, she was given barium which exacerbated the situation when the barium leaked into her intestines causing chemical peritonitis in addition to the bacterial peritonitis she was suffering from the undiagnosed bowel leak. Several surgeries in addition to skin grafts were needed as a result of her infections.

The jury found only Shiawassee Radiology liable, stating they were negligent in not diagnosing the bowel leak in a timely manner.
