Veterans Hospitals’ Contaminated Equipment Puts Thousands at Risk

CNN reports thousands of veterans treated at the Miami Veterans Affairs Healthcare System may have been exposed to hepatitis and HIV after undergoing colonoscopies using contaminated equipment.

A Florida representative and senator have requested an official inquiry by the inspector general of the VA expressing concerns about possible contaminated equipment also being used at the facilities in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Augusta, Georgia.

This negligence during the last five years by the VA health care professionals who did not follow the national standards of care outlined by federal agencies in the sterilization, cleaning, and handling of medical equipment, has left thousands of veterans at high risk of disease.
